Welcome Autumn

Finalmente è arrivato l'autunno, hurrà!

Che autunno è lì da voi? Qui finora il tempo è stato e continua ad essere veramente splendido, c'è il sole ma fa fresco abbastanza da dover mettere il cardigan durante il giorno e una giacchina la sera. ADORO questo clima e questa stagione!
E come festeggiarla se non con un bel tutorial? J

Autumn's finally come, hurrah!

Is it a nice autumn there? The weather here is splendid, sunny but chilly enough to wear a cardigan during the day and a jacket in the evening. I simply ADORE it!
Here's a new tutorial I've made to celebrate my fave season of the year J

È la prima volta che creo una ghirlanda con il feltro

e di certo non sarà l’ultima, anche perché la sua realizzazione è davvero semplice e veloce

beh, ricamo a parte ^_^

E poi è anche un buon modo per riutilizzare quegli scampoli di feltro messi da parte perché "non si sa mai, prima o poi mi potrebbero servire" (io ne ho una scatola piena!)

This is the first felt wreath I make

and it surely won't be the last, as it is such a quick&easy project to make

well, except for the embroidery ^_^

Plus it is a nice way to give new life to all those scraps of felt put aside "in case I'm going to need them" (I've a box full of scraps!)

Per realizzare una ghirlanda come questa, l'occorrente è:

✂ feltro, nei colori dell'autunno. Per le foglie ho usato feltro giallo senape, verde oliva, rosso, marrone in diverse tonalità, arancione; per la base, ho usato feltro color biscotto (2x quadrati di feltro di almeno 15 x 15 cm); per il funghetto, ho usato feltro rosso, bianco e beige

✂ filo semplice da cucito, nei colori biscotto, marrone, rosso, bianco e beige

✂ filo mouliné / da ricamo, nei colori giallo senape, vinaccia e verde olivastro

✂ perline bianche (2 mm)

✂ filo crochet sottile rosso, per appendere la ghirlanda

✂ imbottitura sintetica

✂ forbici appuntite e affilate

✂ ago e spilli

✂ macchina da cucire

✂ pinzette

✂ una striscia di carta forno

✂ matita, carta e stampante per stampare le sagome in fondo a questo post.

To make a felt autumn wreath you'll need:

✂ felt, in different colours. For the leaves I've used mustard, moss green, red, two shades of brown, and orange; for the wreath, I've used biscuit felt (at least 2x squares of 15 x 15 cm each); for the toadstool, I've used red, white and beige felt

✂ simple sewing thread, in biscuit, brown, red, white and beige colours

✂ embroidery thread / floss, in mustard, burgundy and light moss green

✂ white seed beads (2 mm)

✂ thin red crochet cotton thread, to hang the wreath

✂ polyester toy stuffing

✂ sharp scissors

✂ needle and pins

✂ sewing machine

✂ tweezers

✂ a stripe of baking paper

✂ pencil, paper and printer to print out the templates at the bottom of this post.

COME SI FA / INSTRUCTIONS

1. Stampa e ritaglia le sagome in fondo a questo tutorial. Fissa la sagoma di ghirlanda sul feltro biscotto con degli spilli e traccia il cerchio interno con una matita. Piega il feltro a metà e fai un piccolo taglio al centro del cerchio, quindi ritaglia il cerchio centrale lungo il tratto a matita. Una volta finito, gira la sagoma in modo che ogni eventuale traccia di matita resti sul retro e sia quindi invisibile a ghirlanda finita. 

1. Print and cut out the templates. Pin the wreath template on biscuit felt and outline the inner circle using a pencil. Fold the felt piece in half and make a small cut at the centre, then cut out the whole circle along the pencil trace. After that, turn the wreath piece so that the pencil trace is at the back.

2. Con una matita, ricalca la scritta Autumn sulla striscia di carta forno. Fissa la carta forno sul feltro e ricama usando filo mouliné color vinaccia, a punto spaccato.  Rimuovi, tagliandola, quanta più carta in eccesso attorno al ricamo - non strappare! Fai dei piccoli tagli alla carta rimasta attorno ai punti e usa delle pinzette per strappare MOLTO DELICATAMENTE tutta la carta rimasta. Ripeti il procedimento per ricamare le foglioline ai lati della scritta, a punto margherita. Togli la carta e ricama tre nodi francesi, con filo mouliné color senape.

2. Trace the Autumn writing on a piece of baking paper. Pin the baking paper on the wreath piece and embroider it with burgundy floss using split stitch. Cut off the as much paper as possible - don't tear it off! Make some cuts to the remaining paper without cutting the stitches and use tweezers to tear off the paper VERY GENTLY. Embroider the tiny leaves (using detached chain stitch) at the sides the same way. Tear off the paper and make three French knots using mustard floss.

3. Fissa la base ricamata su del feltro biscotto e ritaglia per ottenere il retro della ghirlanda. Cuci fronte e retro assieme con punto festone, iniziando dal cerchio interno. Lascia un’apertura di circa 2 cm e inserisci l’imbottitura con l’aiuto di un attrezzo adeguato (io uso il manico di un lungo pennello), quindi chiudi l’apertura e fissa il filo con un nodo sul retro.

3. Use the embroidered piece as a template to  cut out the back of the wreath. Pin and sew front and back wreath pieces together with blanket stitch, starting with the inner circle. Leave a 2 cm open gap and stuff it, using a proper stuffing tool (I use the handle of a long paintbrush). Sew up the gap and secure the thread with a knot at the back.

4. Per creare le foglie, piega uno scampolo di feltro a metà (sul lato lungo) e ritaglia un semicerchio. Ritaglia una ventina di foglie di forme e dimensioni diverse, tra i 3 cm e i 5 cm. Con la macchina da cucire, cuci le venature centrali delle foglie, con filo marrone e punti molto piccoli (1,5 mm). Per non sprecare tempo e filo, cuci le foglie in sequenza una dopo l’altra, senza tagliare il filo. Cuci le foglie alla ghirlanda con pochi punti a sopraggitto, alla base delle foglie.

4. Use scraps of felt to make the leaves. Fold each felt piece in half and cut a semicircle. Make about 20 leaves in different shapes and sizes, from 3 cm to 5 cm. Use the sewing machine to sew  a straight line on each leaf, in brown thread using tiny stitches (1.5 mm). Sew all the leaves in a row, without cutting the thread.

5. Per creare il funghetto, ritaglia un cerchietto di feltro rosso, uno di feltro bianco e un gambo di feltro beige, usando le sagome di carta. Cuci assieme i due cerchietti, con filo rosso e punto festone. Lascia un’apertura di circa 1 cm, inserisci un po’ di imbottitura e chiudi con un piccolo nodo sul feltro rosso.

5. Use the toadstool paper templates to cut out a red circle, a white circle and a beige stalk. Sew the two circles together, in red thread using blanket stich. Leave a 1 cm opening to insert a bit of stuffing, then sew up the gap and secure the thread with a small knot on red felt.

Cuci assieme le estremità della sagoma di gambo, con filo beige a punto indietro (cuci a circa 2 mm dal bordo).

Backstitch the ends of the stalk together, in matching beige thread (keep a 2 mm seam allowance).

Chiudi il fondo con alcuni punti da parte a parte (vedi foto) quindi risvolta il gambo e imbottiscilo. Fissa il gambo al cappello con uno spillo e cuci le due parti assieme con filo beige e punto a sopraggitto, trapassando il gambo da parte a parte.

Sew the bottom of the stalk close, as pictured. Turn the stalk right side out and stuff it. Pin it onto the cap and whipstitch along the edge, across the stalk and into the cap (see picture).

Per aggiungere le perline, usa del filo bianco e fallo passare tra i punti  festone del cappello (tra il feltro rosso e quello bianco), tirando finché il nodo non scompare all’interno. Una volta cucite tutte le perline, fissa il filo con un piccolo nodo sul bordo del cappello, sul feltro bianco.

To add the beads, poke the needle with white thread  in between the blanket stitches of the cap and pull it to make the knot disappear inside the cap. After adding all the beads, secure the thread with a small knot on the edge of the cap, on white felt.

6. Usa il filo crochet rosso per appendere la ghirlanda e il funghetto al centro.

6. Use red crochet thread to hang the wreath and the tiny toadstool at the centre.

Ecco fatto! La ghirlanda autunnale è pronta per essere appesa alla porta di casa J

That’s it! Your autumn wreath is now ready to be hung of your front door J

Ombrelli

Circa un anno fa, per la prima volta, mi sono commossa al cinema.
Non è stato il film a farmi commuovere (era Monsters University della Disney e ho riso come una scema)
bensì il corto che lo ha preceduto, ovvero questo qui:

I still remember the first time I cried at the cinema
I didn't cry while watching the film (it was Disney's Monsters University and I actually laughed like a fool)
but for this short animation that came before it:


Delicato, dolcissimo, quasi poetico oserei dire
tanto che ancora oggi a rivederlo una lacrimuccia ci scappa (sono proprio una tenerona rammollita, lo so).
Vi piacciono gli ombrelli? A me tantissimo
che siano a spicchi colorati, a fiori o a pois (i miei preferiti in assoluto sono quelli a cupola trasparenti)

oppure dal sapore un po' retrò, col manico in finto-osso e volant lungo il bordo.

Era da tanto (da quella sera dopo il cinema almeno) che l'idea di fare una spillina ombrellosa mi frullava in testa

e quale periodo migliore di questo, piovoso e uggioso, per concretizzare finalmente questo progetto rimasto sulla carta per davvero troppo tempo.

Dainty, sweet, almost poetical I'd say

I still find it pretty touching (I'm an emotional wimp, I know).
Do you like umbrellas? I do a lot
Rainbow umbrellas, polka-dot umbrellas, floral umbrellas
I really like them all (my fav is the domed see-through umbrella)
The idea for an umbrella brooch has been on my sketchbook for ages ( from that night at the cinema at least)
and now I've finally managed to take this project from paper to felt.

Per creare una spilla come questa, l'occorrente è:

✂ feltro, nei colori che preferite (io ho usato il marrone, il menta, il rosa pallido e il giallo pastello) + due quadrati di feltro di almeno 10x10 cm (bianco o a scelta, purché contrastante con gli altri colori)

✂ filo semplie da cucito, negli stessi colori del feltro

✂ filo mouliné, nei colori che preferite (io ho usato il violetto e il verde muschio)

✂ 6 perline argentate da 2 mm

✂ 5 perline del colore che preferite, da cucire al centro dei fiorellini ricamati (2mm)

✂ spilla da balia

✂ ago, spilli e forbici da ricamo appuntite e affilate

✂ carta e stampante per stampare le sagome in fondo a questo post.

To make an umbrella brooch like this, you'll need:

✂ felt, in the colours you prefer (I've used brown, mint, pale pink and pale yellow) + two squares of felt of at least 10x10 cm (I've used white but any colour is fine, as long as it makes a nice contrast with all the other colours)

✂ simple sewing thread (same colour of felt)

✂ embroidery thread / floss in the colours you prefer (I've used lilac and moss green)

✂ 6 silver seed beads (2 mm)

✂ 5 seed bead in the colour you prefer, for the centre of each embroidered flowers (2 mm)

✂ safety pin

✂ needle, pins and sharp embroidery scissors

✂ paper and print for printing the templates at the bottom of this post.

COME SI FA / INSTRUCTIONS
1. Stampa e ritaglia le sagome in fondo a questo post. Fissa le sagome di carta sul feltro e ritaglia un pezzo per ogni sagoma, in feltro di colori diversi. Ritaglia un triangolino largo circa 5 mm e lungo circa 1 cm per la punta dell'ombrello. Fissa la punta e il manico su un quadrato di feltro bianco e cuci con punto a sopraggitto e filo marrone. NOTA: disponi il manico, la punta e la sagoma più grande dell'ombrello sul feltro bianco PRIMA di cucire, per trovare la posizione ottimale (una volta cuciti tutti i pezzi, ci dovranno essere almeno 2 mm di bordo bianco lungo i lati dell'ombrello).
1. Print and cut out the templates at the end of this post. Pin them on felt and cut out a piece for each tempalte, in different colours. Cut a small triangle about 5 mm wide and 1 cm long, to make the umbrella's tip. Pin the tip and the handle on one felt square and sew using whipstitch and matching brown thread. NOTE: place the handle, the tip and the bigger umbrella shape on white felt BEFORE sewing, to find the right spot (be sure to keep at least a 2 mm border of white felt from the umbrella edges.)

2. Dopo aver cucito il manico e la punta, cuci la sagoma di ombrello più grande (menta nella foto), sempre con punto a sopraggitto, quindi cuci quella rosa ed infine quella gialla.
2. After sewing the handle and the tip, whipstitch the bigger (mint) umbrella piece first, then sew the pink and the yellow pieces.

3. Ricama dei fiorellini a cinque petali su ogni spicchio, a punto margherita, con filo mouliné diviso a metà (quindi cuci con 3 fili). Aggiungi una perlina al centro di ogni fiore (del colore che preferisci). Ricama dei nodi francesi sopra ogni fiorellino, sempre con filo mouliné diviso a metà. Infine aggiungi una perlina argentata ad ogni punta dell'ombrello. IMPORTANTE: cuci le perline argentate singolarmente, fissando il filo con un nodo sul retro e tagliandolo a ogni perlina. Se invece vuoi cucirle tutte con il medesimo filo senza tagliarlo ogni volta, ricordati di farlo "zigzagare" verso il centro dell'ombrello, in modo che non formi una fila diritta (è più facile a farsi che a dirsi... vedi foto).
3. Embroider a tiny flower on each slice, using detached chain stitch, with embroidery thread previously separated in half (3 strands). Add a bead at the centre of each flower. Embroider a French knot above each flower with moss green floss (3 strands). Add a silver bead at each pointy end of the umbrella. IMPORTANT: sew the silver beads individually, securing the thread with a knot at each bead. If you want to sew all the beads with the same thread, you'll need to sew zig-zag toward the centre of the umbrella, so that the thread on the back doesn't make a straight line (this is easier done than said... see picture).

4. Ritaglia l'ombrellino lasciando circa 2 mm di bordo bianco. Posizionalo sul secondo quadrato di feltro bianco, fissalo con degli spilli e ritaglia per ottenere il retro della spilla. Su questo, cuci la spilla da balia, quindi unisci fronte e retro e cuci assieme con filo bianco e punto festone. Fissa il filo con un piccolo nodo sul retro.
4. Cut out the umbrella keeping a 2 mm white border. Pin it on the second white square of felt and cut out the back piece of the brooch. Sew the safety pin on it, pin front and back together and sew using blanket stitch. Finish neatly with a knot at the back.

e TA-DA! La vostra spillina ombrellina è pronta.
and TA-DA! Your little umbrella brooch is ready.

Tutorial d'autunno

Le pere sono probabilmente il mio frutto preferito. Specialmente le dolci e succose williams, che trovo davvero irresistibili. Così, per celebrare sia l'inizio ufficiale dell'autunno (evviva!) che questo meraviglioso frutto (e anche perché ultimamente ho la fissa delle spillette), ho pensato di condividere con voi questo mini tutorial facile e veloce.

Pears are probably my favourite fruit. I especially love Williams pears, so sweet and juicy, I simply can't resist them. So, to celebrate the official start of autumn (hurrah!) and its most delicious fruit (and also because I have a thing for brooches lately), I've made this quick&easy pattern to share with you.

Per creare una spilletta a forma di pera come questa, l'occorrente di cui dovrete munirvi è:

- feltro giallo pastello, marrone e verde oliva

- filo semplice da cucito degli stessi colori del feltro + nero e rosso

- lana sintetica per imbottire

- un po' di fard rosa per le guance

- un bastoncino di cotone

- ago e spilli

- una piccola spilla da balia

- forbici affilate e appuntite

- due perline tonde nere (4mm di diametro)

To make a little pear brooch like this you'll need:

- pastel yellow, brown and olive green felt

- simple sewing threads, same colours as felt + black and red thread

- some polyfill

- a bit of pink powder blush

- a cotton stick

- needle and pins

- a small safety pin

- sharp embroidery scissors

- two rounded black beads (4mm wide)

1. Stampate le sagome di pera e foglia che trovate in fondo a questo tutorial. Fissate la pera di carta al feltro e ricavatene due sagome. La foglia è molto piccola, per cui non c'è bisogno di fissarla al feltro con gli spilli. Semplicemente tenete ferma tra le dita sia la sagoma che il feltro, e tagliate. Ricavatene due foglioline.

1. Print the pear and leaf templates you'll find at the end of this tutorial. Pin the paper pear to yellow felt and cut 2x pear pieces. The leaf is very small so you don't need to pin it; just hold the paper template and felt together with your fingers and cut. You'll need two leaf pieces.

2.  Per creare il picciolo, tagliate una strisciolina di feltro marrone, lunga circa 4cm e larga 8mm, piegatela a metà e spuntate i lati per darle una forma leggermente trapezoidale.

2. To make the stalk, cut a 4cm x 8mm stripe of brown felt, fold it and trim the borders to give it a trapezoid shape.

3. Cucite il picciolo e le due foglioline a punto festone, quindi fissateli a una sagoma di pera con pochi punti ma senza trapassare il feltro. Questo le terrà in posizione quando andrete a cucire assieme il fronte e il retro della pera.

3. Sew the stalk and the leaf with blanket stitch, then sew them on one piece of pear with just a few stitches, without going all the way through the felt. This will keep them in place while you'll sew the front and back of the pear together.

4. Sulla seconda sagoma di pera, cucite le perline-occhietti e picchiettate un po' di fard rosa con un bastoncino di cotone per creare le guance. Ricamate la bocca con filo rosso doppio (per cucire una bocca il più simmetrica possibile, potete usare uno spillo come una sorta di "indicatore" che vi dica dove iniziare a cucire e dove terminare, come nella foto)
4. Take the other pear piece and sew the bead-eyes on it. Tap a bit of pink powder blush with a cotton stick to make the cheeks. Embroider a little smiling mouth with double red thread (to make the mouth as simmetrical as possible, you can use a pin as a "marker" to know where to begin and end sewing, as in the picture)

5. Sovrapponete fronte e retro, fissate con uno spillo e cucite assieme a punto festone. Iniziate a cucire da un lato e lasciate una piccola apertura per inserire un po' di imbottitura, quindi chiudete. Cucite la spilla dal balia sul retro della pera, a punto filza.

5. Overlap front and back pear, pin and sew together with blanket stitch. Start sewing from one side of the pear and leave a small open gap to insert a bit of stuffing, then close. Sew the safety pin on the back of the pear, with a simple whipstitch.

TA-DA! Ecco qui la vostra piccola spilletta a pera, molto kawaii direi ^_^

Ovviamente le ho dato un nome e ovviamente il suo nome è William. Ammazza che fantasia stamattina!

Le pere in questa foto sono diventate un deliziosissimo strudel, per cui ora vado a farmene una due fette, che a furia di parlar di pere ho l'acquolina in bocca da mezz'ora ^_^

Pears in this pic have become an exquisite pear strudel, so I think I deserve one  two slices of it right now ^_^

Alberi

Finalmente l'autunno è alle porte. L'aria frizzantina di questi ultimi giorni d'estate lo conferma: la stagione più bella dell'anno sta per cominciare. Sì, ok, lo so che molte di voi non si troveranno proprio d'accordo con questa affermazione, però è innegabile che l'autunno abbia i più bei colori di tutte le altre stagioni dell'anno.

Io intanto, nell'attesa che gli alberi comincino ad ingiallire e le foglie a cadere, ho pensato di precorrere un po' i tempi e creare un mio piccolo bosco autunnale, come sempre in feltro, dal design geometrico e stilizzato, con tutte le sfumature più belle di giallo, verde, rosso e arancione.
Autumn is finally coming. The chilly air of these last summer days says the most beautiful season of the year is about to start. Yeah, ok, I know many of you will not agree with me on that, but it's a matter of fact that autumn has at least the most beautiful colours of all the year's seasons.
While I'm waiting for trees to yellow and leaves to fall, I've made my own little felt autumnal forest, with trees in the most beautiful shades of yellow, green, orange and red. 

Cuciti interamente con la mia adorata piccola Pfaff, sono riempiti di lana sintetica e sebbene siano super leggeri, stanno in piedi da soli con una certa stabilità. Certo, finché non li tocca una folata di vento autunnale... in quel caso però non perdono le foglie, cadono proprio con tutto il tronco! :-P
These are completely machine-sewed with my beloved little Pfaff and padded with polyfill. Although they are very lightweight, they can stand quite firmly. Well, this is unless a gust of autumn wind comes and cuts them down! :-P

Ma questi sono alberini d'appartamento, e il loro habitat ideale non è una collina ventosa ma una bella mensolina o mobile (possibilmente lontano da spifferi troppo forti).
But these trees are not meant to stay on a windy hill, they are housetrees and their perfect habitat is a nice shelf or furniture (possibly away from air drafts).

Lumachine

Non so voi, ma io non vedo l'ora che arrivi l'autunno. È la mia stagione preferita: i turisti finalmente se ne vanno ^_^ la città ritrova la sua dimensione, torna la calma, gli alberi si tingono di mille splendide sfumature, si tiran fuori scialli e sciarpe (adoro!), si fanno le torte di pere, si beve il tè la sera e si guardano i telefilm in tv.
E per portare un po' d'autunno anche dentro casa, ho pensato a dei progettini facili facili da realizzare nelle fresche serate autunnali, comodamente spaparanzate sul divano... con una tazza di tè, una fetta di torta e un bel telefilm in tv ^_^
Il primo è questa ghirlanda autunnale (chi mi segue anche su Facebook l'avrà già vista). Il cartamodello è già disponibile nel mio shop Etsy.

It is my favourite season: turists go finally home ^_^ the town finds its peace again, the trees turn their leaves in so many amazing shades of colours, you can wear scarves again (love!), make pear cakes and drink tea in the afternoon while watching tv series on the couch.
So, to bring a little bit of autumn inside the house, I've come up with a few easy projects that you can work on while eating pear cake, sipping tea and watching telly ^_^
The first one is this autumn garland (you might have seen it yet on my Facebook page). The pattern is already available at my Etsy shop.

Il secondo è una cosa che finora non avevo ancora fatto, ovvero dei sottobicchieri o sottotazze. Ho una specie di mania per le lumache in questo periodo, e così sono nate loro  :) (ok, sono chiocciole, ma "lumachina" mi piace di più).
The second project is something I've never tried to make before (but always wanted to): felted coasters. I've some kind of mania for snails lately, so this is how these two were born :) 

Quei due occhietti neri e lucidi che ti guardano da sotto la tazza a colazione sono davvero carini carini e mettono anche di buonumore ^_^
I think those two little black eyes, staring happily from under a cup of coffee, are really really cute ^_^ 

Oltre al pattern (su cui sto lavorando), sarà disponibile anche un set di quattro sottotazze lumacose già pronto, nei colori dell'autunno. Un'idea regalo carina per chi ama le cose carine ^_^
I'm working on the pattern of these snail coasters now, plus there will be a finished set of four coasters available for purchase, too. A cute gift idea for all cuteness lovers ^_^
